Perhaps one of the most widely known parts of your insurance policy is the collision coverage.

Collision is part of you policy if you so choose to have coverage. Collision protects and pays you when your vehicle takes damage in a collision. However, coverage and payment depends on the amount of coverage and your deductible. Generally, the lower the deductible, the more expensive the insurance. This is because there is an increased likelihood of claims. Most people that carry collision coverage have deductibles of $1500 or less.

Another important factor is the type of collision coverage you have. There are three different forms of collision: broad collision, standard, and limited. Broad collision is the highest form of...

i think there should be a sliding scale of some sort, ie if you have never had an accident, then you should get an option to have insurance or not

I think collision coverage is important if you have car a tleast five years old or new. It costs a bundle of money to get your car fixed without it.

kyrunner: in today's hedonistic world insurance is a nuisance that takes time away from texting (sexting) and twittering. The mentality is "just get me what I need, I don't care what it is called or what it does... Oh and make it the cheapest option!"

depending on age of car, some insurance is totally useless b/c you pay more in the long run than you get back when the vehicle is damaged / totalled.

>> With limited collision, your insurance will only pay for a claim if you are not at fault, and even then, you must pay the deductible. <<

Around here we call that uninsured motorist insurance.

When I lived in suburban Philadelphia, I learned that the same situation occurs in that city that Quick68 mentioned - or at least it did back around 1990 before moving to Florida.

I was surprised to learn about the three types of collision coverage. I might have heard it mentioned many years ago, but recently the term never came up with my insurer, Allstate. Interesting.

Quick68, if you think they do not carry insurance in Columbus you might take a look down here in Texas with the flood we have from across the border!

Collision is so inexpensive (usually less than $10 a month). It's really worth it to let the insurance company hunt down those who get in accidents and don't have insurance or leave the scene of the accident.

I guess this article is related to gas prices because after your collision you may stop using gas for some time and you may pick your next vehicle with better gas mileage. But then again what if you have a collision in a EV which gas is not used?????

These articles are certainly timely for me. An 18-yr old boy ran into my right front fender last Saturday on his bicycle. He came at me from the rear on my blind side and I didn't see him until he hit the car. He suffered a minor injury to his left ankle and they had to take him to the hospital. My fender was dented and his front fork punctured the sidewall of my tire. Because my tire was flat, a wrecker had to lift my car off his twisted front wheel. What looked like minor superficial damage to my fender actually was estimated this morning at $1198.50. Wow!

I am still waiting to see the police report to find out the boy's identity. He had trouble speaking English and the fire-rescue people and ambulance EMT's had trouble getting his identity. I think he had a Green Card with him. The police officer taking the report tried to explain to the boy that he was at fault and was supposed to walking his bike across the street and not racing down the driveway.
