Glitch at refinery causes Great Lakes to see price spike

GasBuddy Blog -- A recently reported issue at BP's Whiting, Indiana refinery, the largest in the Great lakes, is likely partially to blame for an increase in gasoline prices that's hitting pumps in that region today.

Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky are seeing widespread reports of a sizable price increase that's occurring as you're reading this. Gasoline prices in Michigan are jumping to $3.659 while prices in Indiana and Ohio are rising to $3.599. This jump further solidifies what we mentioned last week, that gasoline prices in these areas are among the nation's most volatile.

Average gasoline prices in Michigan stood at $3.56/gal yesterday, while prices in Indiana and Ohio averaged $3.40 and $3.43, respectively.

It'as BP's glitch and we are paying for it. That should come from their profits and the cost of doing business. Our gas prices went up 15 cents this morning. I'm sure it will be higher this afternoon.

Demand is still low. Price per barrel is still relatively low.

Hmmm.

If WE caused the glitch, I would agree the price should reflect the mistake... However, BP is responsible for the glitch, they should be eating the cost!

Big Oil will raise fuel prices if they want to and/or will have a refinery undergo 'unplanned maintenance' if they want to. There is almost nothing you can do, Big oil will maintain its profits without regard to your well being or your possible economic problems. Making your own Bio Diesel by using Waste Vegetable Oil (WVO) from local restaurants may be an option, if you can get that waste oil to process, there maybe some local demand for it.
Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. Consider using other forms of less expensive transportation to lower your cost.
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

Obama's goal is for gas prices to hit $5 per gal. I guess in that respect we can be somewhat relieved for $3.50.

when refineries are running @ greater than 98% efficiency (because the EPA won't let refiners expand/buidl new ones), any little fire/glitch causing a shutdown will cause price increases!

I think its funny that they raise prices by 10 to 20 cents at a time but only decrease it by 1 or 2 cents at a time. If it was more consistent it probably owuldnt have so much uproar associated with the increase.
