How can a gas burning motorcycle/scooter be an alternative fueled vehicle?
Anyone using a alternative fueled bicycle? Did you buy it or make it yourself?

I don't drive one. It would not be worth to spend the extra money for the driving that I do. The car would have broken down before I get my money back.

With the condtions of the market and the fall of jobs and sometimes income, staying with an auto powered by a fuel combustion engine with good milage would be a good idea. These new vehicle with an energy alternative will cost a lot more compared to that of one with a fuel combustion engien. It also be difficult to find a garage with low price or any at all which can do work with these engines. Still, be ready to purchase one when the time is right.

I don't drive an alternative fuel vehicle, but I would like to purchase a hybrid, or one day a plug-in hybrid.

Instead of bailing out the greedy financial Lords. The government should give tax breaks to those that purchase high milage autos.

Are those numbers correct? Even with the downturn in the economy, there has been a few years of build up now, surely the use of alternative vehicles and fuels has greater penetration?

That sounds like a great idea, but. What about safety? I think safety is why more people don't drive motorcycles and scooters.

I am not able to afford the newest of vehicles due to a fixed income. Therefore I try to drive the most fuel efficient of the vehicles that we have. I am finding that the 1991 Ford Festiva gets around 30 mpg, and the 1988 F-150 pickup is getting about 12 mpg. Then the newest vehicle we have has a broken odometer cable, though I'll bet it is getting at least 40 mpg! If one cannot afford the newest of vehicles, I think that we can at least drive the most efficient vehicles, keep all of them tuned up, and drive with the best possible fuel. The Quik Trip in my area has gone to using 10% Ethanol fuel. I'm wondering if any of our vehicles, including the 1974 VW could use the 85 Ethanol available at some of the Shell stations in the area.

My 2004 Prius gets 55 mpg, much better than my wife's Honda Civic which gets 35 mpg. If I just drive around town or the suburbs, I get 50 mpg, but today, after filling up with gas, I got 64 mpg as I came home, and paid $2.99 per gallon for gas. With a 5% rebate from DISCOVER card, that comes to $2.85 per gallon. My neighborhood stations are selling gas at $3.33 per gallon. That's why I keep my eyes open when I am driving somewhere and then post the price on www.fueleconomy.gov. The savings from driving a hybrid are considerable, and I rarely need any repairs. My friend sold a used 2003 Prius for $11,500 on Craig's List two weeks ago. She had to sell it because she is moving to Africa.

My husband and I do not drive hybrid vehicles, but we have tried to convert them to hybrids, but so far what we have done is not working, very discouraging to say the least, especially when you know that there are people out there that have done it and are getting fantastic results.

Why aren't diesels in the survey. Having owned a gas and diesel Jetta, the diesel is 30%+ better than gas and is as good as the hybrids?

Alternate fuel is a good idea. But one should calculate the economics by using pay back formula. Normally used 100,000 miles for 5 years period and with all the cost including (the interset cost for 5 yaers for car Loan + Total Vehicle cost)= $ X1 Additional cost paid due to Alternate Fuel Car = $ X2
Total mileage driven 100,000 and $ Saved by Alternate Fuel.
Compare all savings Vs. Extra cost paid for Alternate Fuel car.
Did you saved Enough to Offset the Cost ?
How many Years? Normally I consider 3 to 5 years pay back if you are planning to keep car for 8 years. Then profitable to buy new Alternate Fuel Car.

we drive a paid for 2000 jeep and a 91 winnebago rv also paid for- so makes no sense to buy something else for just a few extra miles per gallon. we'll just keep on happily motoring and filling up as needed.

I found this site today and found it interesting. You can modify a hybrid to plug it in and get lots more gas mileage...... Go here... "You don't have to plug it in. But when you do, your car essentially becomes an electric vehicle with a gas-tank backup. So you'll have a cleaner, cheaper, quieter car for your local travel, and the gas tank is always there should you need to drive longer distances."

I want to see an in-line, 3 passenger, with luggage area behind, totally enclosed all electric motorcycle, with long wheelbase, gyroscopically balanced and stabilized, with a flywheel. In "Popular Science" or "Popular Mechanics" back in the late sixties, it was reported that the described gyroscopically controlled motorcycle they built, was so stabilized, it would stay upright breaking on ice, even with a two wheel slide. You could adjust the "tipping" to lean into the turn, or stay rigidly upright, or even tip to the outside of the turn, and it wouldn't fall, would restabilize into the verticle position as the motorcycle straightened out into straight line foward movement... I started buying parts to start building it and in a motorcycle shop the owner said "Why would anyone want such a vehicle?" No smell of fresh gasoline, no Power, No wind in the face, no wheelies, no thrills....
I'm 60 years old, "Who cares about those things?", Imagine so streamlined (one passenger wide ) 200 miles per gallon , or rather similar performance, but plugged in so NO GAS... 200 miles per charge... 70 or 80 miles an hour.. He's probably right... Who wants that anyway... ME and I'm sure thousands of americans... and why not.. a absolutely new type vehicle... extreemly low carbon footprint... and surprise, "It gets ya there!!!"
Maybe someone could comment on this?

I've been using a Vespa motor scooter to run errands. It gets around 70 MPG, so it saves me about $200/month in fuel costs.
