I ride my bicycle or walk around town if I'm going relatively short distances.

I agree with paulydel - the cheapest way to drive is with a car that is paid off. That said - When my gas-guzzling 1993 Ford van dies - I'll be buying something more efficient. In the meantime, I'm riding my bicycle more often.

Whats the sense of buying a new vehicle you will have payments and it just isn't worth the cost. You drive less and keep your paid off vehicle.

I'm not using alternative because I cant afford to purchase anything else with the gas prices the way the are, but I have cut way back on driving, vacations and errand running.

Most of the options aren't really alternative fueled choices. Why didn't they actually list any real alternatives like biodiesel?

I have a flex fuel engine. The price of ethanol is usually well below gasoline, but it gets a lot lower miles per gallon. When I do the math, gasoline is still a lower cost per mile. I get about 24mpg with gasoline and about 18mpg with ethanol. Pretty big difference!

There are no commercially available alternative fueled motorcycles. The latest I'm aware of is some European makes experimenting with diesel MCs, but these aren't even in the market yet.

There must be a lot of bicycles and motorcycles somewhere because they do not represent 11% of the transportation in this area.

i am similar to dieselfreak and am a strong believer in diesel vehicles. I recently did a report on diesels and the average anywhere from 30-70% better mileage than there gasoline counterparts. The fuel is cheaper to make is more abundent in the U.S. and the milage is great. Not to mention the durability and ease of maintenance. In my eyes diesels should be our short term solution till we cn make electric and 0 emssions vehicles more failsafe and reliable. GO DIESELS

I drive a diesel truck that gets 30+mpg. I would like to see more diesel cars on the road. In europe there are lots of cars that get 50 plus mpg on diesel. What about compressed natural gas low emissions low car maintenance and very cheap. I know there is no profit for oil companies and low tax for the government I guess this will never happen.

I don't have an alternative fueled vehicle and don't think this is the answer we should be looking for. The hybrids are expensive for what I believe will be an interim, short term vehicle until a good electric is introduced. Before we're ready for the vehicles that are currently being worked on we need to have a sufficient supply of electricity and the distribution system so we don't end up with brown outs and useless vehicles. Nuclear appears to be a good possibility. If we don't make some real changes we'll keep getting the results we've been getting.

Since mid-April I have been riding a bicycle 13+ miles each way to work 4 days a week. The one day off is to take clothes for the next week and bring laundry home. Instead of 30 mpg in my Toyota Matrix, I burn 44 calories per mile on a bike and save $600 a year in gas. I am a 58 male. Eat your heart out kids.

I would consider it, though. I see lots of flex fuel impalas areound town. My car is paid for, though, and gets 22-23 mpg (city) and 33-34 mpg (highway), unleaded regular gas, and I can't justify spending another $23,000 or more right now.

I go from my 16/20 mpg Ranger to my cars to the ultimate mileage using a bicycle. The transport I use depends on need and distance. Haul my boat with the Ranger, road trip with my convertible, shorter trips with the Subaru and local on a bike.

After being an avid hypermiler and averaging not much more than 35 miles to the gallon city/suburban driving I realized the best way to not use as much gas is to just stop driving so much. That's my alternative vehicle, any means. It has now been over a month since I filled up. I am excercising more because of it and I like it.

CNG IS the way to go! We have been driving a Civic GX and CNG fuelled Crown Vic for over three years! Maybe some of you others should try what T. Boone is talking about! CNG = COMPRESSED NATURAL GAS My truck tuns on Propane. All of these burn cleaned and are better for the environment. CNG does NOT come from petroleum as some here think and IS a renewable fuel.

now that gasoline has been coming down in price, the customers have lost their jobs and can't afford it anyway. this happened when jimmah cahtah was president. frugality is going to be the guiding light just as it was about thirty years ago. obama bin ladin is laughing in his cave and should be in his grave. yogi berra said it best, deja vu all over again and the greedy scum in the banks have more money than they had years ago. The system is breaking down again and it's all i can do to bite my tongue regarding ethnic epithets. a friend asked if this is the time to buy gold. i said that time is past. buy lead.

Is diesel considered an "alternative fuel"? Based on the underlying premise of the question (essentially: "are you using a fuel-efficient mode of transportation?") I voted for "I am using an alternative vehicle not listed above" because I drive a diesel-fueled vehicle.

If this poll were correct 11% of the vehicles would be motorcycles and bicycles. I don't think so. Oh, and we are all voting for BHO too.

I agree with "Manual Shifter". Not a clearly worked question. Plus motorcycles use gas and bicycles use what alternative fuel?

Your question is not clear. It's confusing and doesn't help in accessing/considering honest opinions/answers. You're getting as bad as the political pollsters with their leading/set-up questions! Try to be clear in the future if you expect meaningful participation of we members.

can't justify the cost - hopefully they'll come down in prices - i do have a gas-sipper that's more than paid for - i don't like to waste anything
