While today's car quality continues to rise, according to J.D. Power and Associates' 2012 U.S. Initial Quality Study, it is still possible to find yourself visiting the dealer for repairs more frequently than you'd like. Here's how to minimize the hassle.

There is way too much computerized junk in cars already. I’m surprised Subaru is not on the top-rated list; ours have always been trouble free.

Power has made a fortune with this dishonest little play on words. It began back in 1985 with the introduction of the Ford Taurus. It excludes the two most important aspects of true quality, which are durability and reliability, neither of which can be "initially" judged.

As to Ford SYNC, my Ford dealer has a resident SYNC expert who can explain the hoops you have to go through to use an Apple device with it. First one is it takes a while for the list of tracks to download from the iDevice to the SYNC computer, during that time you can't use the speech commands. Second one is it sometimes does not play music after it is plugged in (it counts down and plays silently), that corrects when you unplug the device, plug the device back in, and re-select USB. Warts and all, it still stands head and shoulders above any other way to play your own music in your ride.
