Fewer cars being hit by gas-guzzler tax

USA Today -- Automakers are using new technology to wean their performance models off the list subject to the dreaded federal gas-guzzler tax.

Advancing engine technology now is making it possible to produce cars that are more powerful but also more fuel efficient -- enough to avoid being subject to the federal tax that tacks up to $1,000 to $7,700 onto the price of new vehicles with very low mileage. Some top industry executives forecast the tax's demise within a few years.

"You will see that going away," says Steve Cannon, CEO of Mercedes-Benz USA. "All the new engine technology will avoid the gas-guzzler tax."

The tax was aimed at discouraging people from buying the least-efficient and most-emission-spewing of cars. But automakers are using technologies such as variable valve timing ...

I don't recollect Reagan being in office in 1993, the last year the fed gas tax was raised.

This is good news, but the federal gas-guzzler tax should fade away as more fuel efficient vehicles.

See, that's all it takes to get manufacturers to"find" new ways to comply with environmental regulations once they find out they can do some things to put their product in compliance with standards and avoid assessments in order to sell their product? Now ain't that just sumthin?

It is because people won't buy their cars if they will be hit with a gas-guzzler tax.

Myth that "... You will see that going away, ...". Taxes never "go away", they are just diverted to another reason, project or excuse by the legislators.

We need big heavy body on frame cars that will get great mileage. Take an old Crown Vic or 1980's Caprice, put a direct injection or turbocharged engine (Ford Ecoboost) and you could get 30 mpg or better.

All they have to do is tie the "gas-guzzler tax" to the CAFE standard and they'll be back in business.

It is about gummint regulations. All this economy must be paid for some way - in the price of the improvements and maintenance that makes the car more fuel efficient.

Better tech means better cars and better prices, but the government will still find a way to tax you.

I Owned a 1969 Ford Torino in 1970 with a 302 cu in. 8 cylinder engine and I got 32 miles to the gal on the highway this car was mid size and made of steel, now days they consider 35 miles to the gallon in a plastic car with a four cylinder good gas mileage. Whats wrong with that picture?

pretty sure the last time the Federal gas tax was raised was under Reagan.

If we paid for Iraq 2 (in 2003) with a gas tax because the only reason for Iraq's importance is the oil under it and the oil in the region, there would have been protests that would have made the anti-Vietnam protest look like child's play.

I wonder what it would be per gallon of tax to pay for Iraq (not Afghanistan)? $2, $3....$5. It was not a cheap war, assuming we pay back the countries and people holding U.S. Treasury notes.
